TEACHING MODEL
At Malatya Turgut Özal University TÖMER, Turkish is taught to students within an eclectic (selective) model. The aim of this model is to implement a functional teaching model by bringing together the most effective applications of each method, rather than limiting the language teaching process to a single method. In this context, the main focus is not only on grammar-based language teaching, but also on communicative language teaching, i.e., teaching Turkish in a way that students can use it functionally in their daily lives. In this language teaching process, students' listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills are addressed with a holistic approach, and lessons are planned taking into account the relevant competencies included in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language Program prepared by the Turkish Education Foundation. In addition, Turkish language structures are approached from a functional perspective, using an intuitive method rather than a direct one. In assessment and evaluation, which is an important part of language teaching, exams are prepared based on the four basic language skills. Furthermore, to develop students' speaking skills, speaking and writing clubs are organized in addition to lessons, and various activities and cultural interaction activities are carried out to enable students to use Turkish correctly, beautifully, and effectively.
Language Skills Development: The Turkish language teaching program as a foreign language includes various activities and practices to develop students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students are given the opportunity to apply the language used in daily life and academic settings.
Teaching Language Structures: The basic structures of the Turkish language are covered. Topics such as verb conjugations, subject-predicate agreement, and sentence structure are explained using examples.
Vocabulary Teaching: Various exercises are carried out to expand students' vocabulary. Words and idioms frequently used in daily life, as well as terms and expressions used in academic settings, are taught.
Written Expression Skills Activities: In order to equip students with writing skills, a step-by-step approach is taken, consisting of pre-writing, writing, and post-writing activities. Through processes such as topic selection, organizing information, checking and correcting, and evaluation, students are taught the skill of expressing their feelings and thoughts in writing.
Oral Communication Skills: The program focuses on developing students' skills in speaking, presenting, discussing, and listening effectively in social settings. Prepared and unprepared speaking skills are developed through oral production and oral interaction exercises.
Reading and Comprehension Practices: Students are provided with various texts to develop their reading and comprehension skills in different genres. These texts are typically academic sources, articles, news, and literary works.
Cultural Interaction: Information is provided about Turkish culture, history, traditions, and current issues. This provides students with the opportunity to better understand Turkish society and culture.
Student Assessment: Various assessment methods are used throughout the Turkish language teaching program to evaluate student progress, including portfolios, exams, project assignments, presentations, observation forms, and rubrics.
